If something I post doesn't seem accurate, it's probably just a joke. I don't advise using any information on this site for anything important.
Looking for actual lessons for marching? Start by seeing if there's a System Blue Event near you.
Go see a DCI show near you this summer! That is all.
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]
A brand new season of Drum Corps Hornlines Warming Up (an audio podcast) begins!
Also be on the lookout for some audio episodes of Marching Lessons and more Mail Bag episodes as I continue to stall making the practical exam season finale. Send in your questions to marchinglessons@gmail.com or right here at http://marchinglessons.tumblr.com/ask
You can listen to last year’s episodes of Drum Corps Hornlines (and Drumlines) warming up here: http://music.erikjskinner.com
I made this Facebook cover photo out of the Blue Devils’ show logo. Feel free to use it if you feel so inclined!
Sorry for the lack of posts lately, to break it up ever so slightly here’s a marching thing I’m excited about!

Forte Drum and Bugle Corps is still looking to fill two trumpet spots, one mello spot, and one contra spot. Please consider it! I’ve seen all of our music and the drill to our first movement. Forte is going to be a whole new corps this year.
For information, you can contact me (click here) or Jason, the brass caption head, at fortebrasscap@yahoo.com
It’s not too late to march this summer!

I’m not making a video for this one since it’s a specific question. I might still make a video for it with a non-serious answer though.
Short answer, no you probably don’t need to worry about missing school, or taking classes online instead.
Long answer…
The years I marched in high school, I didn’t really miss any school, whether it was for camps, spring training, or tour itself. Most corps are flexible with academic conflicts for camps and spring training. I don’t know the specifics of current corps camp schedules etc. but you should check out Teal’s schedule for this year for a good idea of what next year will be like. Also try shooting an email to your section of interest’s caption head, or the corps director. The biggest conflict I found was the time I lost to spend on homework on camp weekends. That’s not too big of a deal if you plan a few days ahead though. I lot of my corps-mates would work on their homework during meal breaks, too.
Another consideration is how close Teal’s camps are to you. If you have to fly to camps, or drive more than a couple hours, then there is the possibility of having to miss some school (if you choose rehearsal over school, of course). I didn’t really miss any class in high school since I marched a local corps, but I missed a whole lot of class in college. Not always for drum corps, but yeah.
If you’re going to audition your senior year, I assume that means you would be marching the summer between high school and college. I know some colleges have their freshman orientation around the same time as DCI finals, so that’s worth checking out.
All that said, I think everyone who wants to march should audition as soon as possible, so don’t wait until you graduate high school to audition. Even if your schedule doesn’t fit yet, you will at least gain some more experience from auditioning that you can apply at your next audition. Meeting the staff and veteran members never hurts.
I hope that answers your question somewhat. Thanks for writing in, and look out for the less serious answer in video form sometime soon :-)
